The Thinker of Starlight Tower

I discovered "The Thinker" of Starlight Tower while browsing through pictures I recently took of our granddaughter in her recent visit here.  Whilst she comfortably rests at her mother's lap at the pool deck seemingly glancing towards Silver Sands and St Pete Beach in deep thought her expression was so "déjà vu"! Searching my memory bank it dawned on me what it reminded me off: It was Rodin's

"The Thinker"!

The Thinker by Auguste Rodin

I found astonishing the uncanny similarity of the two entities and recognized it as interesting discussion subject which will enrich the intellectual content of our website and some may find worth noting.

Examining the connection in depth the outward  resemblance corresponds to two parallel yet diametrically differing reverse inner sentiments producing however the same outward visual effect of the animate and the inanimate one looking to the future the other looking to the past: the young human thinking ahead towards the future with anticipation, hopes, and dreams and aspirations waiting to be realized and

the inanimate bronze masterpiece conveying his creators translation of the figure's agonizing inner struggle and search looking at his past!

Most people know "The Thinker", some people know that it was created by the famous French sculpture Auguste Rodin (November 12, 1840 – November 17, 1917), but not many people know that this figure stands only 27" high in its original setting and was not created as a single piece but was part of a monumental sculptural group consisting of 180 figures "The Gates of Hell" which includes several famous statues like "The Kiss" all created by Rodin who was inspired by "La Divina Commedia" or the "Divine Comedy" the epic poem written by Dante Alighieri, and regarding the artistic arrangement was stirred by Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise or Porta Del Paradiso (name given by Michelangeo).

The enlarged version of the Thinker that most people are familiar with, consists of only 25 known original castings and Rodin himself supervised less than 10 and the rest were cast posthumously. Of these original 10 that were supervised and patina finished, one is at his graveside, one is at the Rodin Museum aka Hôtel Biron and one is in front of the Cleveland Museum of Art and was acquired in 1917.

I hope you enjoyed this brief presentation and agree there is a definite resemblance between Starlight's and Rodin's Thinker!
