BRIEF MARATHON HISTORY
To refresh your
memory, Marathon is a long distance road running event of 42.195
kilometers or 26 miles and 385 yards to be exact.
The name Marathon
belongs to a small Greek town that became famous with "The
Battle of Marathon" in 490 BC where a small number of Greek
soldiers were able to hold and defeat the overwhelmingly
powerful Persian army of King Darius I of Persia who wanted to
conquer the remainder of Greece and incorporate it to his
Persian Empire and thus securing his western borders. But as
always the Greeks fought not like heroes but as heroes fight
like Greeks according to Sir Winston Churchill in the Second
World War hence they won the battle. Immediately they send a
soldier back to Athens to announce the winning outcome of the
battle. The name of this soldier was Pheidippides. He run
barefoot and at full gear the distance from Marathon to Athens
at full speed and without stopping and upon his arrival he was
able to utter one word only "NENIKIKAMEN" (We Won), and then he
dropped dead!

of Marathon, 490 BC taken from the
United
States Military Academy at West Point.

The Greek wings
(blue) envelop the Persian wings (red) while their
strategically-thinned centre filled the gap made between them.
The First Modern
Olympics took place in Athens Greece April 10 1896 and are
officially known as the I Olympiad. These games were the first
Olympic Games since the Roman emperor Theodosius I banned the
Ancient Olympic Games in 393 as part of the Christian campaign
against paganism!
The Marathon run
during the first Olympic Games was won by a Greek shepherd
Spyros Louis who finished the
race at the record time of 2 hours 58 minutes and 50 seconds. He
stopped only once at his uncle's house to have a glass of wine!
Since then an expression was developed in Greece where to
emphasize that someone is really fast you say:
Egeine LouiV (He became
Louis).
