Wonderful October...
when the air conditioners are silenced, the nights are cool and the days sunny and warm.
And what better time for the “Pool Renovation Project”?

Pool Renovation Project
At its June 21, 2012 meeting, the Starlight Board approved the renovation of our pool. When President Ron Porat was seeking onsite supervision for the project, Arlene Kuhn and Marlene Reid signed on for that responsibility.
The following article is written by Marlene and is a comprehensive report on the background history, and the renovation that is taking place.

Some major long-overdue renovation/resurfacing/upgrading of the pool and the pool decking has begun, as of Monday, October 15. The quartz-type material used to line a pool (the coating-type of the surface of Starlight’s pool) has a lifetime expectancy of 10 to 16 years. Starlight really lucked out since research has determined that Starlight’s present coating was the one applied when the current pool was built in 1987- 25 years – WOW! It replaced the original bean-shaped pool which was destroyed at the time of Hurricane Juan. The pool’s coating has been living on “borrowed time.”

While even now, the surface of the pool is not in serious disrepair, the contractor the Board has contracted with has agreed to remove and patch loose plaster “sort-of-expected-normal deterioration” up to 1% of the total square footage of the pool. (Thankfully, at first blush it seems that we fall within the scope of that criterion). If the deterioration goes beyond this amount the cost increases significantly. So we need to think of this project, at this time, as “preventive maintenance insurance” as well as improvement. The new coating will be a Hydrazzo (marbleized) finish for endurance as well as beauty.

An important factor in the timing is that on several levels, the current pool is out of code-compliance. The ladder must be replaced with a new cross-braced ladder. The existing step riser heights are not uniform and will need to be adjusted, nor does the existing step tile meet code. The present gutters of the pool are not in compliance. Neither are the gutter grates. The depth markers will have to be replaced and relocated to meet code requirements. Also, International “NO DIVING” tiles are required. The Health Department has been notified that the work has begun, and when completed the Health Department will perform an inspection to assure Starlight that all the code requirements have been met.

The pool improvement project includes installation of three Pentair Intellibrite G5 LED pool lights (total assemblies). The pool decking is being expanded by an extension of six feet on the South end and six feet on the West side. This will give more room for day-to-day usage, accommodating the chaise lounges, and permitting grouping of chair for socializing. An added incentive for expanding the deck, which will be covedred with cool Artistic pavers in an appealing diagonal pattern, is the possibility of adding a pergola at a future date. With more and more awareness of skin cancer caused by an excess of sun exposure, many owners and residents have expressed a desire for a provision of some shade cover near the pool. Hopefully, it will be in the cards (and in the budget) soon!

The Board apologizes for any inconvenience during the pool renovation, and requests your full cooperation to assure everyone’s safety. We trust that we will have a finished product (in about eight weeks) that will make all Starlghters proud, and serve us well for years to come!

Some People News...

  • Sue is Moving

Sue Alley, #705

Sue Alley moves to TN. October 2012 Starlight Tower Express Newsletter in St Pete Beach Pinellas County Florida

We are very sad to report that Sue Alley, longtime Starlight resident and owner of Apartment 705 is moving to Tennessee to be closer to her family.

Sue began her business career in the Chemistry Lab at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, near Knoxville. In later years she was a Data Manager and retired after 31 years at the facility.

In 1987 she came down to spend a few months relaxing in an apartment at Starlight Tower and stayed 25 years!

This lovely lady will surely be missed , and we wish you Godspeed and much happiness in your new home.

  • A Starlighter and her seashell flowers

Arlene Kuhn has many talents. This “rose” is just one of many beautiful things she makes from seashells.

Arlene’s instructions:
“Here is what I do to make the flowers":

  1. First I take a piece of floral wire and twist the end to create a "platform" for the shells to sit on.
  2. Then I hot glue the shells to the platform arranging them as petals on a flower.
  3. For the center of the flowers I crushed shells in a blender to various sizes and then painted the crushed shell with acrylic paint.
  4. Spread some glue in the center of the flower and drop the crushed shells onto the glue.
  5. Knock off the crushed shells that don't stick to the glue and you have your flower center.”

Arlene says: “That’s it in a seashell!”
She makes lots of other pretty “shell objects,” too.

  • With Sympathy

Our sympathy to Ursula and Denis O’Connor on the death of Ursula’s brother, Father Carl, who died on September 27. Father Carl spent many vacations at Starlight and said Mass at St. John’s when he was here.

  • Our District Commissioner

Jim Parent, our District Two Commissioner has a website at: www.JimParentSPB.com . Right now it is “down”, but should be operational again sometime this week. Lots of information there regarding the city’s doings. On November 6, St. Pete Beach citizens will be deciding whether to allow the Commission to contract with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement, replacing the SPB Police Department. This would save the city (and taxpayers) $1.3 million dollars every year in operational expenses.

  • A final note from the birds

They sure seem to like sitting on the T-head groin, drying their wings. There were about 200 perched out there the other day, enjoying the beautiful fall weather.
