The very First Issue of  Starlight Express Newsletter was created by the Editor and Chief Pat Ifft on February 29, 1992 and since then is maintained and produced monthly by her for 17 years! All Starlighter's owe immense gratitude to Pat in keeping them informed with all happenings good and bad.

A beautiful afternoon on the beach……temperature is about 82 degrees, light breeze. There is a group of high school youngsters having a great time out in front of Starlight on the beach……does this make us wish we were 18 again? I don’t think so. Some of the beach has eroded, but you can still walk in front without getting your feet wet. 

Most of the information in this issue has come from the Board meeting on May 14. If you were to walk onto our property, I think you’d be pleased. The grounds are well kept, and the lobby and elevators are clean and shiny. Christy and Tim are a great team, and Liberte is supervising the whole operation.

The new board is doing a wonderful job, and we thank them for their dedication. President Marlene (and husband Dan) Reid have left for their northern home, but Marlene stays in touch by phone. So here goes with some information from the Board.

• I am going to act as Recording Secretary for the Board, but I will not be a voting member. My task will be to take minutes of all meetings, and transcribe them for Board approval.
• The handicap-accessible ramp has been installed on the west side of the building. The north wall and fence have been repaired. The foot shower outside the fence has been installed, many thanks to Ric Garland and Jack Carlock. Now you can wash your sandy feet when you come off the beach and not have to use the shower inside the pool fence.
• We will soon have new signage on the Gulf side of our property….”no trespassing”, “private homes”, etc. “No trespassing” signs must have the Florida statute number on them or they are not valid. Also there will be a new “pool rules” sign installed. Signs will be white aluminum with turquoise lettering.
• Doors to the pump room have new closures for security, and new vents so that the doors do not have to be propped open. Thanks, Bill Wales and Frank Gulia.
• Louisa Simos has designed an online CORBOD, which you can download and print and mail, or fill out and submit it online. Either way, they will go directly to Liberte. After reviewing, Colleen McLachlan, our Liberte manager, will fax them to Starlight. Our internet site is: www.starlight-tower.com. • A committee to look into objective standards for building appearance has been formed. Members are Marlene Reid, Lynn Dopp, Gina Machado and Gigi Guthrie.

• A committee to work on updating the association documents has been formed. Members are Lynn Dopp, Chair; Ric Garland, Al Stucko, Kristin Korotney, Ed Ifft, Dennis Dickinson, D. D. Wales and Bill Isaacs.

• The next regular meeting of the Board will take place on October 16, 2007.

Wahlbeck Pest Control will be in the building on June 4 and 5 (Monday and Tuesday).  Please make sure that our maintenance people have your key, so that they can get in and get rid of any pests you might be harboring.  (Applies to bugs, only!)  We have had Wahlbeck Pest Control for almost as long as we’ve lived at Starlight, and they do a great job.  Your maintenance dollars at work!

SOME PEOPLE NEWS

Christy talked to Brooke Kovalska, our former maintenance gal. She is working as a Pharmacy Tech at the VA Hospital – Bay Pines, and says she is doing great there, although she really misses Starlight.

We extend our sympathy to the family of Joyce Blackard, owner of Apartment #508, who died recently. Joyce had not been able to come to Florida for several years, because of fragile health. In years past, she was a regular at the pool, and truly enjoyed her life at Starlight. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, John.

Also, our sympathy goes to the family of Katherine Hackett, who wintered at Starlight for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, John.

Sally Borlund had a bad fall several weeks ago and had to spend some time in the hospital. She is home and recovering from a broken wrist and other bruises.

Joann Stewart, Apt. 701 is in Palms Hospital where she underwent foot surgery. We wish you well, Joann, and hope you are home soon.

A note from Anne and Lorn Hiller, Apt. #606. She says they were able to download the Starlight Express, and enjoyed getting all the news. She goes on to say, “We arrived home safe and sound although we did drive through all the rain, but we were very fortunate that our house was dry and weathered the months we were away. They wish the new board much good luck.
 

I would be delighted to receive emails from anyone with news of life “outside Starlight”.

There is always room for more.

This will probably be the last Starlight Express until late August. Summertime, and we all need to recreate a bit. Therefore, here are the summer birthdays……………all of us who never got to bring cupcakes to class on our birthdays!
