Spring is well underway,
and if the crowds on Upham beach are any indication, this is
going to be a banner year for tourism on our little island. Of
first importance to all of us is probably the work being done on
our beachfront. |
 |
A complete update from Andy Squires,
Pinellas County Coastal Manager,
is posted on the bulletin board in the mail area. The ugly but
utilitarian fence in the water in front of Starlight
is called a sheet pile cofferdam,
and should be completed by the time you read this. Work will
continue on groins 2 & 3 and a completion date of June 27 is the
goal. The long-term plan is to install permanent rock structures
to replace the temporary geotube structures. This work is
scheduled for 2013, assuming the funding and permits are
acquired. On March 8, 2011, the County approved a contract with
Coastal Planning & Engineering to
design and prepare permits to install permanent rock structures.
Lets hope and pray that all the necessary funds will be found.
Meantime it will be interesting to find out if the cofferdam
works.

The Shuffleboard Tournament & Dinner |
The annual Shuffleboard Tournament and dinner were graced with
the most beautiful day we’ve had in several years. Bright sun
and mild breezes greeted the players as they gathered for the
first rounds in the morning of March 19. Marlene and
Dan Reid chaired the whole affair ... with help
from the world’s most dedicated, efficient Committee:
Sophie Bryk, Carl and Sharon Diehm; Gail Dolphin;
Beth & John DuBeau; Anne & Lorne Hiller; Verna & Jim Murphy;
Ursula & Denis O’Connor; Anne & Chuck Prokop; Edith & Don
Schneider and Marcia Thorpe.

Sophie made breakfast |
More than 50 people enjoyed the lasagna dinner at the
end of the day, and after we were full of pasta and pie, door
prizes were handed out to almost that many lucky people. |

News, info and reminders from the
Board:
First of all, the Board wants to
thank all residents for the impressive cooperation of all
residents and shareholders during the garage re-roofing project.
It went off without a glitch. Even the rain held off! And a
special thank you to Bill Palmer,
#307, for arrangements with the City to give us some slack on
parking restrictions. |
- Tom Hooten
(#703) was re-elected Board Vice President.
- Laundry room hours
will remain as they are for the present,
with possible amendments to the rules to come after further
investigation into other options.
- A number of pool
lounges have been re-strapped ... so be
sure to cover the chair with a towel to prevent staining.
Also the pool lights have been repaired.
- If you are doing
alterations in your unit, DO NOT cut
the wires to the TV roof antenna. Even though you might not
need it, other units are connected to it.
- If a resident wants
to make a complaint, the procedure is
to fill out a CORBOD (forms
available on the credenza in the mail area), sign your name
and place in the Board mail slot.
The Board cannot deal with anonymous notes.
- The elevators
were inspected by Gulf
Coast Inspection and passed with just 2
minor follow-ups.
- The next Board
meeting will be Thursday, April 14 – a
week earlier than usual.
