Life in Paradise continues to bless us with warm sunny days...
The pool has seen a lot of action, with water temps comfortable for active workouts or leisurely swims. The shuffleboard court has had an extensive make-over, due to the efforts of Denis O’Connor and Terry Rafter (pictured here) and Vic “Michaelangelo” Dinardo. There has been a lot of activity on the courts, as residents enjoy the combination of pleasurable exercise and a challenging sport.

Don't Miss This...

A growing group of dedicated shufflers meets every Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock, and this coming Tuesday morning (January 29) the girls have challenged the guys to a winner-take-all match to determine supremacy in shuffle boarding at Starlight!
We’re all invited to come down and cheer on the players ... and may the better gender prevail!

Pool News...
A new heater has been installed.
Landscaping will soon add to the ambiance of our gorgeous new pool and deck area.
A salt-tolerant sod will be installed, and all the planters will sport new plants and bushes.
We will be using the same landscape company that services the grounds for Envoy Point and Caprice.
On the wish list for future improvements ... a pergola for relaxing in the shade.
But that will have to wait for funding to be available.

Grim view!

Pictured bellow is the sight that greets us at the North entry door.
Pretty grim, and not at all in tune with our recent building rehab and pool renovation!

But coming soon:

A new phone entry system with digital directory
, so that the unlovely clutter will be reduced to zero!
And the most important feature is that we will be able to allow entry with a cell phone!
This will be a Big Plus to residents who don’t have or would like to eliminate their landline.

Other News from the Board:

Annual Meeting
All owners are encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting, scheduled for Tuesday evening, February 12 at 7 p.m. Please send in your proxy as soon as possible, even if you will be attending the meeting. This allows the Board to establish a quorum ahead of time, and reduces the amount of time for counting shares the night of the meeting. There will not be an election, since the number of applicants equals the number of Board members. Those who will serve during the coming year are:
  • Michael Brennan,
  • Bill Isaacs,
  • Edel Quinn,
  • Marlene Reid,
  • Noah Shatken,
  • Bill Wales and
  • Warren Weathers.
Officers will be decided at an organizational meeting to be held directly after the Annual Meeting.
An added feature of the meeting ... Bruno Falkenstein, manager of the Hurricane Restaurant in Pass-a-Grille and sea turtle defender extraordinaire will talk briefly to meeting attendees about the sea turtles on Upham Beach, their habitat, nesting habits, population, etc. There will be time for questions, also.

Parking Permits
Here’s an update on the process for applying for the Type E 2013 permit:
Go to St. Pete Beach City Hall – 155 Corey Avenue, City Clerk’s Office.

Owners: Need driver’s license, and one other form of residence ID
(voter registration, car registration, Ad Valorem tax statement);

Renters: Who are renting for 6 months or more may bring a current lease;
(for shorter term leases, your owner must apply).

Permits cost $20.
The 2012 permit expires January 31.

Our building has one flaw, according to plumbers….the drains carrying waste from our kitchen sinks leading from the building are apparently not angled properly to keep the lines flushed out. Therefore the ground floor units sometimes experience a backup problem. The plumbers tell us we can help mitigate this problem in several ways.
  • Run a generous amount of water when you use your garbage disposal, and allow the water to continue to run for a bit after you turn off the disposal.
  • Never pour grease down the sink, which causes a congealment of particles which would otherwise flow through.
  • Occasionally, run hot water down the sink drain for a few minutes.

If we follow these suggestions, it will save considerably on having the drains reamed out which will be appreciated by the first floor residents and the Starlight budget.

The elevators have been inspected and will receive updated inspection certificates soon.

Building Maintenance
CPS Protection has made inspection of walkways and made several minor repairs; the roof has been inspected and is scheduled for necessary minor repairs.
Upcoming Events...
No definite dates yet ... but possibly a Super Bowl party or Valentine party. Watch the bulletin board and mail counter for notices. Also, spring isn’t far away ... and that means Shuffleboard Tourney. Stay tuned!
People News...
  • Congratulations to Maria and Neal Sogard who are the proud parents of their first child, Natalie Marie, born December 29. Doting grandparents are Evangelos and Louisa Simos (908).
  • Our sympathy to former Starlighter, Marcia Thorpe on the death of her sister Rhoda on Christmas Eve. Marcia reports also that husband Don is recovering from a long bout of pneumonia. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.
  • Mardy Dunn (403) is recovering well from a broken arm, suffered in a fall.

Many thanks to the Board of Directors for their dedicated service.
