Starlight
Express

If you’ve been in touch with people up north, they are amazed at
the mild winter weather. Montreal has the same temperature as
Vancouver, Buffalo and Detroit the same as Charlotte, and
Chicago the same as Oklahoma City. Ski resorts are singing the
blues everywhere in the northeast…….in the Western New York ski
region they can’t even make snow because of all the rain. At the
other end of the spectrum, Denver is snowed in again. It’s as
though a divide was inserted in the USA and any place east of
the Mississippi is a designated “no snow” zone. Here in
Paradise, we have had some pretty gloomy days, and very warm
temps. No danger of over exposure to the sun. But of course, our
gloom never lasts and the sun’ll come out……tomorrow. Someone
should write a song!
There is little to report at this stage
of the building refurbishment process. Various contracts are
in the hands of the Association attorney for her review.
Optimistically, work on the building could begin as soon as
late this month. Realistically, it will be sometime in the
spring. In order to conduct the business necessary to bring
the work to fruition, the Board will hold special meetings
on
January 10, 17 and 24th,
(all Wednesdays); and February 8 (a Thursday); all at 7
p.m. There will be a regular meeting of the Board on
Thursday, January 18
at 7 p.m. Please plan to attend as
many of these sessions as possible. And the Annual
Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 13. You will
receive a mailing with all the information you will need.
Doug Joy, Apartment 407, is the president pro tem of the Board
of Directors. Doug hails from Detroit, where he was professor of
Sociology at Eastern Michigan University and the University of
Detroit. He has two daughters, and his wife is a teacher in
Detroit. Doug acquired his real estate license several years
ago, and owns an apartment building in Detroit, near Wayne State
University, his alma mater. Doug will be a candidate for the new
board. His message to Starlighters: “We are all part of the
community of Starlight. Let’s go out of our way to be
accommodating to others.”
Speaking of the Board…The current Board is: Doug Joy; Maggie
Dickinson; Al Stucko; Bill Wales; Hugh McGuigan; Edel Quinn; and
Lynn Dopp. The deadline for submitting your name for the Board
has passed. There are nine candidates for the Board, which mean
there will be an election. The new Board will be seated
immediately after the annual meeting, February 13.
Fire Department Regulations
If you are unable to walk down the stairs in case of an
emergency, call the St. Pete Beach Fire Department (363-9207)
and register with them. This way they will know who they have to
evacuate in case of emergencies.
Thanks to Hugh
This
is an appropriate place to thank Hugh McGuigan for his long
years of service to Starlight. Hugh moved here in 1986 from Long
Island where he was Superintendent of Schools at Port Washington
Union Free School District. He has served on our Board for most
of his years here, many as President. In Hugh’s words:
“Twenty years of active service is enough for anyone. I believe
that it is time for newer and/or younger people to assume
responsibility and bring new ideas before us. Of course I will
help any Board member who asks for assistance. Thank you for
your many years, weeks, and days of support and best wishes to
our new President.”
Thank you, Hugh, for your long years of devotion to Starlight
Tower.
