Ordinarily the Express takes a vacation during the summer...
But two very sad events have taken place in the past few weeks, and so we wanted to express our sorrow and to make sure all Starlighters were aware.
The month of July took its toll on two well-loved Starlight owners.

On July 3, Jack Christman died at his home in Minneapolis after a two-year illness. Jack and Lois first moved to Starlight in 1991, and enjoyed spending their winters here in Apartment 708. Almost everyone who came in contact with Jack experienced his quirky sense of humor. He always introduced Lois as his “first wife”, and even his obituary called her his “first wife”. He was a retired Northwest Airlines pilot, and if you saw him in the elevator and said, “Hi, Jack!” – he’d gasp in mock horror... ”Don’t say that!” We’ll really miss this big good-natured gentleman.
Our deep sympathy to Lois and all the Christman family.

A few weeks later, we learned of the sudden death of our dear “flower lady”, Sophie Bryk, on July 24. Sophie and Stan moved into Apartment 608 in Starlight in 2005. Almost immediately, Sophie endeared herself to residents with her friendly manner and her willingness to help out wherever she saw a need. She worked her magic on the flower beds... and who can forget the lovely gardenia tree at the north entrance. Sophie was a superb baker and was bighearted in sharing her delicious treats with all of us. She was a true Starlighter – no task too much work or too inconvenient for her to handle. We’ll miss this big-hearted lady very much.
Our deep sympathy to Stan and all the Bryk family.

Over the years, almost all of the original Starlight owners have died, and in the 22 years that Ed and I have lived here, many more have gone, including many people who rented during the winter months. When I went over old lists and tried to name everyone, I found it impossible. Every time I thought I had a complete list, I’d remember someone else who had left us.

Gigi Guthrie (208) came up with a very fine idea to help us remember all the Starlighters who have passed away... and to honor their memories. And so on Sunday, August 5, the heart-shaped planter on the west lawn was dedicated to the memory of all Starlighters who are gone from us. Guy LaPine and Rose Gauthier, Louisa Simos and Dee Dee Wales and Gigi and George Wolff were instrumental in the planting. Other Starlighters were there to express their sympathy and lend their support to the project.

Stan Bryk turned over the first shovel of earth and other Starlighters began setting the donated plants, flowers and herbs. A small plaque is being inscribed and will read:

Sophie’s Garden
In memory of our beloved
Starlighters

Some other news:
  • Jim Parent, our District Two Commissioner, has alerted us to be aware that the Republican National Convention will take place in Tampa beginning August 27 to 30th. Four hotels in St. Pete Beach will host delegations and at any given time during the day and into late night, up to 40 busses will be traveling through the city. This means allowing extra time to get to a destination during that period.

  • City Hall is looking for volunteers to work in the Recreation Department, the Community Development Department and at the reception desk.
If you’re interested, phone City Hall – 367-2735.

  • The “seaweed” that is washing up on the beach is called “sargassum”. It is typically well out in the Gulf. It can be uncomfortable to walk on, but is basically harmless.

  •  We want to extend our sympathy to Denis and Ursula O’Connor on the death of Denis’ sister Helen on July 19 in Ontario.

  • Guy LaPine and Rose Gauthier are looking for a garage to rent as a home for their “toy car” – the one they decorate according to season and drive in parades and other events.
If you have a garage available or know of one, call them at (727)360-6315
